Frequently asked questions
What is a Nigerian postal code?
A Nigerian postal code (also called a zip code) is a 6-digit number assigned by NIPOST to identify specific delivery areas. The first 3 digits identify the state region, the next 2 identify the LGA delivery district, and the final digit identifies the specific local delivery zone.
Is "postal code" the same as "zip code" in Nigeria?
Yes โ Nigerians use both terms interchangeably. "Zip code" is the American term; the official NIPOST terminology is "postal code." Both refer to the same 6-digit identifier.
How do I find the postal code for my area?
Use the search box at the top of this page, or browse by state. You can also open any area page on Locate.ng โ the postal code is listed in the sidebar Quick Facts panel.
What if I don't know my exact postal code?
Most online forms in Nigeria accept the general state code (e.g., 100001 for Lagos Island, 900001 for FCT Abuja) when the specific 6-digit code is unknown. For mail delivery, the area-specific code is recommended.
