University of Lagos at a glance

The University of Lagos (UNILAG) is one of Nigeria's foremost federal universities and one of the highest-ranked tertiary institutions in West Africa. The main campus sits at Akoka, Yaba, on the Mainland of Lagos State, with a satellite Annexe at Surulere housing parts of the Faculty of Law. UNILAG enrols upwards of 57,000 students across undergraduate and postgraduate programmes, with a faculty of more than 3,000 academics. Its motto — "In Deed and in Truth" — is widely recognised across Nigerian higher education.

UNILAG is part of the country's federal university system, governed by a Vice-Chancellor reporting to a Governing Council. The university is consistently ranked in the top tier of Nigerian universities by both domestic rankings (NUC, JAMB consideration data) and international ones (QS, Times Higher Education, Webometrics).

History — from 1962 to today

The University of Lagos was established by an Act of Parliament in 1962, two years after Nigerian independence, as part of the first generation of federal universities created to expand higher education in the new nation. The university opened with three faculties — Business and Social Studies, Law, and Medicine — and rapidly added Engineering, Arts, Science, and Education through the 1960s and 1970s. The original Akoka campus was developed on former wetland in Yaba; the central avenue (Akoka Road) still runs through the heart of the campus today.

The university grew through periodic expansions, with the College of Medicine establishing its presence at the Lagos University Teaching Hospital (LUTH) in Idi-Araba. Successive Vice-Chancellors have shaped the institution — from Eni Njoku (the first), through to the present leadership. UNILAG produced many of the country's earliest professionals across law, medicine, engineering, and accounting, and continues to dominate the corporate recruitment lists of major Nigerian and multinational employers.

Akoka, Yaba, and the campus geography

The main UNILAG campus occupies about 802 acres at Akoka, on a peninsula extending into the Lagos Lagoon. The campus is bordered by Akoka, Bariga, and Iwaya on the landward sides and by the lagoon on the water sides. The lagoon frontage is a defining feature — the Senate House, the Faculty of Education, and the famous "Lagoon Front" all sit on the water, with sunset views that have become iconic in Nigerian university imagery.

The campus is organised around the central Akoka Road, with academic blocks, student halls, the central library (the Kenneth Dike Memorial Library), the sports complex, the Multi-Purpose Hall, the University Senate Building, and the various faculty buildings distributed across the footprint. The Surulere Annexe at Idi-Araba houses the Faculty of Law (Postgraduate) and parts of the College of Medicine alongside the Lagos University Teaching Hospital.

UNILAG operates across 12 faculties:

The Distance Learning Institute (DLI) runs UNILAG's part-time and online programmes. The School of Postgraduate Studies coordinates Masters and PhD programmes across all faculties.

JAMB admission and cutoff marks

Admission to UNILAG happens through the standard Nigerian university entry pathway: a Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) UTME application, followed by a UNILAG-specific Post-UTME screening. UNILAG's JAMB cutoff has historically been one of the highest in the country — typically 200+ JAMB UTME score as the floor, with competitive courses (Medicine, Pharmacy, Law, Computer Science, Engineering disciplines) requiring well above 250 in practice.

O'Level requirements: minimum of five credits including English Language and Mathematics, at not more than two sittings (WAEC, NECO, NABTEB, or equivalent). Specific courses require additional subjects at credit level — Medicine requires Biology, Chemistry, Physics; Engineering requires Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry; Law requires Literature in English and Government; and so on. The official UNILAG website publishes the current admission requirements each cycle.

Direct Entry applicants with NCE, ND, HND, A-Level, or first-degree qualifications can apply through JAMB's DE channel. Admission is to year 2 (or year 3 for some HND holders), based on the applicant's CGPA and the relevant subject prerequisites.

Fees and financial planning

As a federal institution, UNILAG fees are among the most subsidised in the country. Undergraduate tuition has historically been close to zero for indigenes and a modest fee for non-indigenes, with ancillary charges (accommodation, registration, sports, ID card, library access, faculty levies) bringing the total per-session cost to typically between ₦40,000 and ₦200,000 for most non-clinical programmes. Clinical programmes (Medicine, Dentistry, Pharmacy) carry additional faculty-specific charges.

Postgraduate fees are higher than undergraduate, with PhD programmes typically the most expensive. The bursary office is the authoritative source for current rates. Scholarships are available through federal, state, NDDC, faculty-specific, and corporate-sponsored streams — most are advertised on departmental notice boards and the university Students' Affairs Division.

Accommodation, food, and student life

UNILAG operates a network of student halls — Mariere Hall, Eni Njoku Hall, Sodeinde Hall, Madam Tinubu Hall, Moremi Hall, Honours Hall, and the postgraduate halls. Allocation is competitive — demand significantly exceeds supply, and most undergraduates spend at least some of their programme in off-campus accommodation in Akoka, Iwaya, Bariga, or Yaba. Off-campus rents are negotiated by students directly with landlords; word-of-mouth referrals remain the dominant discovery channel.

Food on campus runs from the cafeterias and bukkas in the halls of residence to the student-frequented restaurants in Akoka and Yaba. The famous "Mama Put" bukkas serving generations of students have become institutions in their own right. The Akoka Senate Building cafeteria, the Faculty of Engineering canteen, and the various Hall cafeterias all serve full Yoruba lunch menus at student-friendly prices.

Student associations are central to campus life. Departmental, faculty, and ethnic associations run year-round programmes; the Students' Union government coordinates campus-wide initiatives. Sports teams compete in the Nigerian University Games Association (NUGA) and the West African University Games (WAUG). The Akoka campus's Multi-Purpose Hall hosts concerts, conferences, and graduations.

Career outcomes and the UNILAG alumni network

UNILAG graduates dominate the senior ranks of Nigerian banking, law, medicine, engineering, and the public service. The Faculty of Law's Bar Final pass rate is consistently among the highest in the country. The Faculty of Pharmacy produces a meaningful share of the country's licensed pharmacists. The College of Medicine's housemanship placements are highly competitive — most graduates secure intern roles at the Lagos University Teaching Hospital or at federal hospitals across the country.

The UNILAG alumni network is one of the most active in Nigerian higher education. The Alumni Association coordinates annual homecomings, faculty reunions, and mentorship programmes; the diaspora UNILAG associations in the UK, US, and Canada run their own programmes. Major employers — Big Four accounting firms, MTN, Dangote Group, NNPC, the Central Bank of Nigeria — have multi-year graduate recruitment programmes anchored at UNILAG. The Lagos Business School (separate institution but with overlapping faculty) is geographically nearby and has historically drawn many of its participants from UNILAG alumni.
